PARENTING WHEN EXHAUSTED

This is my blog and I can do what I want.  And from time to time, I have a guest writer so you don't get too sick of the sound of my voice.  The following article, Parenting When Exhausted, is written by Holly Carling, a gifted acupuncuturist and nutritional guru, (not unlike myself) who is featured today.  I do accept submissions from other talented writers, so please feel free to petition me to print you.  Cheers, G
PARENTING WHEN EXHAUSTED


Moms and Dads frequently come into my office, complaining of many life-disrupting symptoms, most of which involve fatigue. One of their greatest fears is losing their children. Not to death, kidnapping or worse tragedy, but to the lack of their ability to parent because of their health, most often fatigue.

As parents, we all want our kids to have the best life has to offer for them. There are so many things to experience. We enroll them in sports, dance, music, martial arts and the like, hoping to give them vital life skills. We have the greatest of intentions for them. Then as parents we have to be able to keep up with all that. The financial costs and toting kids around from one activity to the other is enough to take a toll on the best of us. When you get ill, all your best intentions of the fun activities for your kids gets put on the back burner because “mom doesn’t feel well”, or “dad is too tired”. They come into my office, many times in tears because their health is interfering with what they want for their kids. They feel inadequate as parents.

When parents get too busy – trying to keep up with the demands of parenting, working harder or longer hours to keep up with the financial burden of having a family, trying to acquire the wealth they think is essential – they get worn out. The things they need the most during this time, such as quality nutrition and exercise get dropped out.

They get too busy to cook a healthy meal. Instead they opt for the quick and easy pre-packaged foods, microwaveable foods or a fast food restaurant. The times they need the nutrients the most – during stressful times - is when they opt for nutritionally devoid foods. Yes, these foods have “nutrients” in them, but they have been “enriched” with synthetic counterfeits, masquerading as nutritionally superior. However, they are not life-giving, cell building, functional nutrients. They are just marketed to quell you into believing they are, so you are less stressed about food.

When you are stressed or ill, or symptomatic in any way, you need nutrition. You need a greater density of nutrients in your food because not only are you providing nutrients for that day’s functions and cell building, but you need the extra to counteract the effects of stress.

Because healthy foods seem to be the first sacrifice as we get busy, we also sacrifice our mental wellbeing. We no longer have the mental reserves to cope with our kids and our tolerance tanks. We become grouchy and tempers fly more easily. Not just at the kids, but at our spouses too. The pressures of responsibility mount and we become more agitated at work as well.

In an effort to provide a quick fix, we run to drugs. We feel desperate. Desperate to feel well, overwhelmed with the responsibilities, disappointed in what we aren’t doing, that we “should” be doing as a parent (or as a spouse), fearful of the things kids could get into (drugs, weapons, pornography, etc.), and the emotions mount. Soon we call it “depression” and run for the drugs. We reach for a medication to placate this barrage of emotions we don’t know what to do with. We reach for substances such as coffee, energy drinks and sugar to give us an energy boost so we feel we can cope with life.

When that no longer works we reach for “health in a bottle” – something more natural to force our body into feeling better. The problems is, we grab for something cheap and in as few of pills as possible. The only way to accomplish that is by chemicals. So now we’ve added a chemical stressor to the pile of other stressors. Now we’ve created internal stresses to parallel the external stresses.

What we really need is a support system. We need the nutrients to support function. We need exercise to provide an outlet for stress. We need a method of relaxing and de-stressing on a daily basis. We need balance in our lives. We need energy and good health. Even though what is needed is nutrients, and it be found in a bottle (only if it is concentrated whole foods) as well as in quality of foods eaten on a daily basis, we can’t find the solution in any other type of bottle.

We also need someone to help us feel well. Acupuncture, massage, chiropractic, naturopathy, nutritional counseling are some of the best tools to help get you well. Disease came on slowly over time, accelerated by stress. Putting in some time to remedy it is essential. Re-evaluate the costs to your health to run around trying to do life, versus staying home and creating a quality life. Quality of time with your kids and spouse – not because disease has left you no choice, but because you’ve decided to slow down and do what’s needed to get well - in of itself is healing.

Relax, eat a well-balanced diet of whole foods, cooked fresh, and spend time with your family. You will find that your energy will get restored, your health will improve, and the quality of your life will be what you envision it could be. Sunlight, Sunscreen, Cancer - What Are the Facts?

So much has been written about getting out of the sun, the main concern being skin cancer. Sunscreens abound and yet the level of skin cancer has not decreased.  Let us back up for a moment and look at cancer 100 years ago.  Back then, skin cancer affected less than 1% of the population, and yet today, the odds are 50/50 of getting a skin cancer issue. WHY? A 100 years ago, people worked predominantly outdoors, hours in the direct sun and did not use sunscreen. In fact, the more people worked outdoors, the healthier they were. 
Sunscreens
Researchers at the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found that tiny particles commonly used in sunscreens caused long-term neurological damage in mice. The study found that titania, which is listed on labels as titanium oxide, induced cultured mice brain cells to manufacture chemicals that are protective in the short term but can cause damage over time. This creates a big question mark on the safety of sunscreen. As I have said before, it is important to know how to do QRA toxicity testing for your own protection, for sunscreen and other products one may put on skin.
The questions are so intense on the issues of sunscreens and their ingredients, that people working in these manufacturing plants may be exposed to toxins that may even be worse than asbestos. If you breathe them in or apply them to your skin, they have the potential to cause havoc in your body and this is only the preliminary study. Experience has said from the past that these studies when done by independents (other than industry sponsored) will only get worse.
Don't get fooled into thinking that the sunlight is harmful - that is all hype. It is only dangerous if you are uninformed about healthy fat and nutrition, which quite frankly most people are not, including the medical world. Sunscreen in addition to putting harmful chemicals into the body also blocks out the healthy suns rays.
What changed?
The issue of skin cancer has been directly correlated to the introduction of and increased consumption of hydrogenated oils in our diet. Hydrogenated oils have replaced the good healthy oils that naturally occur in foods for the purposes of prolonging shelf life and the ease of manufacturing, distribution, and preservation of appearance concerns, all at the expense of our over-all health.
In addition, most of the cooking oils on the market, such as corn oil, safflower, sunflower, sesame oil, are so high in omega-6 fats (virtually 100%) that it distorts the healthy omega-6 to omega-3 ratio out of balance. This ratio is important in resistance to cancer, and most particularly skin cancer. The ideal ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 should be about 1:1 while the typical American is about 15:1.
If you look at even modern day societies such as the "Hunza" peoples of the Himalayan mountains of Northern Pakistan, these people spend the greater majority of their time out in the direct sunlight, tending to their fields and orchards, yet the incidence of skin cancer is almost non-existent. Consider this, there is virtually no hydrogenated oil in their food supply.
Research has shown that people who consume margarine have a 700% increase risk of cancer over those who don't.
When hydrogenated oil consumption is very limited and there is a high dietary intake of high quality essential fatty acid oils such as high quality extra virgin olive oil or grade 10 coconut oil,  the health benefits of sunlight are enormous.
In 2001, the National Academy of Sciences published a comprehensive review showing that the omega 6:3 ratio was the key to preventing skin cancer development.

Research has been done on mice with tumors, in which the sunlight was the only test variable, and the tumors were inhibited.
Sunlight is the best source of usable vitamin D, bar none.
Sunlight has shown to aid in reducing breast tumors by between 30% and 40%
Sunlight has been shown to reduce cholesterol levels.
The list could go on but the important thing to know is twofold: (1) Sunlight is a health benefit and not to be feared, and (2) Get those healthy oils in your diet while getting the hydrogenated oils out. - The only caution is if you are not used to being out in the sun, begin slowly - say 10 minutes a day and gradually work up as you begin your oil change. Do it over a several week period but work up slowly so that you never get burned.
What to DO
  1. Most sunlight exposure in the Western world is in the summertime, which it it now.  So extending time in the sun should ideally begin in the fall and winter months, since the sun is so intense now.. Since most of us have consumed far too much hydrogenated oils, beginning to extend time in the sun can be a challenge and so the change needs to be gradual and with an "Oil Change" in our bodies. This procedure will take 6 to 8 months.
    1. Once the oil change is completed, then it is ideal to get an average of 20 minutes of direct sunlight a day.
    2. All sunlight has health benefits, but the best sunlight for building and regenerating health purposes is the 7:00 A.M. to 9:00 A.M rays.
    3. Working up a sweat, during that time, increases the benefits even more.
    4. For persons struggling with sore muscles, using a non-toxic source massage oil (such as coconut oil) rubbed into the sore areas for 2 to 3 minutes and left on for 20 minutes has produced outstanding results. The improvement is the result of several applications.
The Oil Change
  1. Add Essential Fatty Acids to the daily nutritional intake
  2. Use the Quantum Coconut Oil in cooking and food preparations

What You Put On Your Skin, You Are Eating

When you use personal care products such as skin care, soaps, gels, creams, lotions, etc, due to the fact that the skin absorbs these products, you are in fact eating them. Toxic ingredients are rampant in the personal care product industry and unfortunately are widely used in so-called natural products.
In an effort to maximize your health, it is necessary to avoid the use of products that contain toxic ingredients. Some of the most common toxic ingredients include:
  • Alcohol - (Isopropyl) This is a solvent that is found in hair colorants, body lotions, after shave, perfume and fragarance. It is also used in anti-freeze. It has been linked to causing depression, headaches, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and liver toxicity. The fatal dose if taken internally is only one ounce.
  • BHT - can affect you when you breathe, may damage the developing fetus, can irritate eyes and skin, can cause headaches, dizziness, lightheadedness, confusion and passing out and may cause damage to the liver.
  • Fragrances - most beauty products contain fragrance, and this includes shampoos, conditioners, facial skin care products, soap and bath products as well as sunscreen. In fact the list is endless and up to 4,000 chemicals can be involved. Many of the properties in fragrance are potentially carcinogenic and toxic and can affect the central nervous system causing dizziness, vomiting and nauseas amongst other symptoms.  Natural fragrances and essential oil-type ingredients are fine, though.  Just be careful of the chemical ones.
  • Sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth (SLS) is in 90 per cent of all shampoos and really anything that foams up. It is a surfactant and also used in detergents. Research has shown that it is damaging to the immune system, the eyes and skin, and when combined with other chemicals in products, it can be carcinogenic.
  • Polyehelene glycol (PEG) can be found in facial cleansers and is added to dissolve the oil and grease on our skin. It also thickens the product to make it creamy. This is used very effectively as an oven cleaner. PEG disrupts the immune system, stripping our skin of its natural moisture and is also potentially carcinogenic.
  • Propylene Glycol (PG) is found in hair care productss, cosmetics, after shave, deodorants, mouthwashes, toothpaste and is also used in processing our food. It is the active ingredient in anti-freeze, and industrial workers handling this product must wear gloves and eye protection because of its toxicity to the skin, yet it is high in concentration in products that most people are using on their skin daily and even putting it into their mouths (i.e. toothpaste and mouthwash). It also has to be disposed of at hazardous waste sites.
  • Mineral Oil - sounds safe, but it is NOT. It acts like a seal over our skin and stops the skin from breathing, disrupting our natural immune barrier. It stops the skin from eliminating toxins naturally, causing them to bio-accumulate in the body. Besides the increased toxic burden, this can cause acne and premature skin aging.
  • Methylparaben and propylparaben - are dangerous - period. Parabens are used as preservatives in cosmetics and there are four main parabens in use. Methylparaben, thylparaben, propylparaben and butylparaben. They are also osteogenic which means that they can mimic estrogen in the female body. Parabens have been found in most breast tumors and they have also been shown to escalate the progression of a tumor.
  • Imidazolidinl and Diazolidinl Urea - these are most commonly used preservatives after parabens. They have been shown to cause contact dermatitis and release formaldehyde which is both very toxic and carcinogenic.
  • Triethanolamine (TEA) often used in the base of a product to adjust the pH. Tea causes allergic reactions including eye problems, dryness of the hair and skin and can be toxic if absorbed into the body over time.
Be sure to only use personal care products that do not contain any of the above ingredients.
Chlorine in our Shower Water
It is important to not only get toxins out of our body but to keep them out of our body. There are many ways to do this -  with the air we breathe, the food we eat and the products that we put in and on our bodies. One of the most problematic is when we step into a hot shower, we are exposing our body to a slew of toxins and most critically the highest concentration of chlorine and its by-products. When we shower with hot water the pores of our skin open up, making it like a sponge. Meanwhile, the steam from the shower is carrying those toxins into our lungs at 100 times the pace as if you drank the water. This creates a direct path to your lungs and bloodstream. The concentration for a 10-minute shower exposure is about 600 ppm of chlorine. Chlorine causes pulmonary edema and reduces oxygen transfer capacity of the lungs. A study done in 2007 by the American Journal of Epidemiology,showed that participants who drank chlorinated water had a 35% increase risk of bladder cancer. However, those who took long baths or showers in chlorinated water had a 57% increase risk of bladder cancer. Chlorine also robs the moisture and elasticity from your skin and hair, leading to dry and itchy skin and brittle hair.
We recommend the special shower filter that converts the chlorine into a harmless gas.
